Alien: Out of the Shadows
An Amazon Origianl. Written by Tim Lebbon and Dirk Maggs. Narrated by Rutger Hauer, Corey Johnson, Matthew Lewis, Kathryn Drysdale, Laurel Lefkow, Andrea Deck and Mac McDonald
As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. The on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell – and trimonite, the hardest material known to man.
When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating-and waiting for suitable prey.
Hoop and his associates uncover a nest of Xenomorphs and hell takes on a new meaning. Quickly they discover that their only hope lies with the unlikeliest of saviors…Ellen Ripley, the last human survivor of the salvage ship Nostromo.
Alien is one of my favourite films, plus with the second film Aliens. So when I saw this among the other originals I thought, I must listen to this. I did have my reserves, seeing as after the second film the franchise started its decent into chaos. And with Prometheus and its second being such a disappointment, I was in the middle before starting.
Once I started listening I was immediately captivated. The fact that, instead of it being a book, it was more of a performance. Like a radio drama. With use of sound effects and eerie pauses. Though the film really did create such tension this audio book definitely did a good job at it, with use of the sound effects and the narrators ability to portray their characters emotions. There were times I just could not move but listen in dread.
One thing that kept me looking at the narrators names was that Laurel Lefkow, the voice of Ripley, really did sound like her. I kept thinking I would see Sigourney Weavers name by the other narrators.
The fact that was not trying to recreate one of the films, but add something to the continuous story, was something that interested me.
Now for the complaints…
Without giving anything away, the last part of this performance explains what happens when Ripley reenters her shuttle (to create continuity with the films). For me there is something that is explained that is a bit of a cheaty way to saying… don’t worry nothing will change with the series.
One other complaint is IT IS NOT LONG ENOUGH! When I was listening to this I was thinking that it would last me a week or so. Nope, I started on a Monday afternoon and finished on Wednesday morning. I spent every minute I could spare just listening to what happens to the crew. I guess this is not really a complaint but meh… deal with it.
Would I recommend it? Yes! If you are into the alien series or even something a bit thrilling and tense. I would immediately recommend this audio performance.
And Plus, I see there is a second addition to the series. Which I will be listening to next.
Until Next Time….
